Hip-Hop’s Art of War: The Demand for Conflict & How Drake & Kendrick Made It Pay | @viagogo

The lyrical melee between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has only positively impacted their projected sales for live shows, causing massive international demand for both artists.

After the release of GNX, Drake took to Australia for the ‘Anita Max Wynn’ tour. This was the rappers first visit to Australia in 8 years. The tour sold out and is projected to be one of the most successful hip-hop tours ever in Australia.

Many critics have said the Canadian rapper may be somewhat stunted from the 2024 rap beef, however the numbers are saying something else. Drake remains as big as before, it just so happens there was also growth for Kendrick Lamar.

In early May at the height of the back and forth, Viagogo noted a 160% increase in the demand for Drake tickets going to show that those who may not have been fans before had wanted to find out more and experience a part of pop-culture history in person.

This goes to show why Drake’s Wireless Festival residency this year is such a big deal. With all 135,000 tickets selling out today within minutes, fans are eager to see one of the two most prominent figures in rap this decade perform for the first time since 2019 in London.

There is a certain beauty that comes with the art of war in hip-hop. The deep cutting back and forth has historically created a double edged sword for anyone involved. From Tupac and Biggie to Jay Z and Nas, there is never truly a victor, but instead cultlike following for either side arguably strengthening their core fanbases. So whether Kendrick and Drake bury the hatchet or not, they still have incredibly solid support from their fans and even gained more of them.

After the Superbowl, both Kendrick and Drake had increases of interest for concerts in the thousands. Drake had a 12,000% jump on Viagogo whereas Kendrick had a surge of 7,600%. The demand this high especially for one of many ticket resale platforms, proves the market share across others like Stub Hub and Twickets is astronomical; with certainty searches spiked across these too.

The importance of Drake using this moment of leverage to headline Wireless on the 20th anniversary with the same three-night offer he reportedly turned down for Rolling Loud, according to the festival co-founder Tariq Cherif, goes to show the sheer size of the UK scene and how large the market for rap music is here.

Using demand for international shows instead of domestic appearances is a great way to utilise this increase in engagement and further grow an international audience away from home and those notably most familiar with an artists music. This has been done multiple times, notably by Michael Jackson who Drake shares the most Billboard Hot 100 number 1 singles with.

The UK is arguably the most familiar with Drake outside of North America. After co-signing some of the biggest UK artists on ‘More Life’ in 2017, it is now confirmed he will be joined by BBK on the Saturday for the 20th anniversary of the crew. 8 years since Skepta appeared on that album and co-signing Drake to be the first Canadian in BBK, it is a full circle moment.

The spike of interest is great to see for both artists and just goes to show the wider cultural impact. Hip-hop is only growing as a genre and is now in the best phase in years.
