9 UK female artists making a global impact with their music #IWD

The UK has been a hotbed of musical talent for decades, producing some of the most iconic and influential artists in history. While the industry has traditionally been male-dominated, a new generation of female artists are making waves and changing the game. From soulful ballads to infectious pop anthems, these women are making a global impact with their music, garnering critical acclaim and amassing huge followings around the world. In this post, we’ll be highlighting 9 UK female artists who are breaking barriers and making their mark on the international music scene.   1. Pinkpanthress

With the number of viral hits Pinkpanthress has had in under 2 years, you would think she’s been in the game for so much longer. Her addictive sound and Y2K aesthetic have gained the 21-year-old a spot on the UK charts with hits ‘Break It Off’ and ‘Just For Me’ (sampled by Central Cee on his track ‘Obsessed with You’). Last month Pinkpanthress released part 2 of her track ‘Boys a Liar’ and recruited New York rapper Ice Spice, the collaboration is just another one of Pinkpanthress’ tracks that have gone viral. The singer-songwriter has worked with super producer Mura Masa, been featured on the Black Panther 2 soundtrack, and performed a timeless Boiler Room set, earning her listeners across the UK, the US and Australia.

  1. Raye

South London songstress Raye is not new to the scene, 2017 saw her become well known for her streak of hits, including ‘Decline’, ‘Check’ with Kojo Funds, ‘Tipsy’ with Odunsi (The Engine), and more. Raye’s single ‘Escapiscm’ feat 070 Shake has succeeded in 1M streams across music platforms, bagging the singer her first number 1 as an independent artist after escaping her label at the beginning of 2022.

  1. Cat Burns 

At 22 years Cat Burns has already been nominated for a variety of awards including 1 MTV Europe Music Award and 3 Brit Award nominations. Although Cat has been making music since 2016, it was in 2020 that she gained prominence. Her unique vocals were first recognised when she first began to release covers and original music during the first lockdown, however, it was the track ‘Go’ that went viral online with millions of people using the sound to create their own renditions of the record.

  1. Flo

The UK has had many girl bands over the years, but in recent times we haven’t had a group quite like Flo. Gifted with all of the components for success, aesthetically they look good, vocally they all have amazing voices – collectively and individually with their music videos giving that early 2000’s nostalgia this generation craves. With hits like ‘Not My Job’,  ‘Immature’ and debut track ‘Cardboard Box’, it’s hard to believe Flo only broke out this time last year. The trio have performed on US talk show Jimmy Kimmel, won awards from the Brits, MTV Europe Music, BBC Sounds and more. Flo have additionally worked with some of the biggest names in music including MNEK and Stormzy. 

  1. Bree Runway

Bree Runway is a force to be reckoned with as she combines hip hop and pop to make her own unique sound, best known for ‘Pressure’, ‘Hot Hot’, and ‘ATM’ featuring rap legend Missy Elliott. Bree has won Best International Act at the BET Awards and Rising Star at the Brits. With millions of monthly listeners, the singer waves the flag for the next generation of Pop, Bree Runway has just finished supporting pop sensation Lizzo on the European stretch of her tour. Bree has worked with Baby Tate and Stormzy.

  1. Jorja Smith

West Midlands songstress Jorja Smith has been around for many years now and continues to make waves with her music, she has collaborated with a variety of global artists including Popcaan, Drake, Burna Boy and a plethora of UK artist like Shaybo, Enny, Giggs and Mirra May. Jorja Smith has won British Female Solo Artist at the 2018 Brit Awards and has been nominated for some of the most prestigious awards including Ivor Novello and Mercury Prize. Jorja has had a variety of hits that have reached the top 10 music charts including ‘Blue Lights’, ‘Be Honest’ ft Burna Boy and ‘On My Mind’ ft Preditah. Alongwith singing Jorja has recently extended her talents to acting, as she was featured in the latest Crtz ad. 

  1. Little Simz

Despite debuting in 2014, it was her album Stillness in Wonderland that truly kicked things off, alongside ‘Grey Area’ and ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’. Little Simz is not a new artist, as many may know. However, the last few years have seen the rapper finally receive the flowers she so rightfully deserves, winning Best Album of the year at both the MOBO’s and Mercury Prize Awards for her 2022 album, ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, Simz also won Best Solo Act from the UK at the NME awards. Simz is best known for tracks like ‘Woman’ ft Cleo Sol, ‘101 FM’ and ‘Point & Kill’ ft Obongjayar. Little Simz has performed on platforms and stages all around the world like Glastonbury, and NPR Tiny Desk, and most recently performed her latest track ‘Heart on Fire’ at the Bafta Awards.

  1. Tiana Major 9

Tiana Major 9 has come a long way from her 2017 breakout track ‘Levee (Let it Break)’ and her 2019 debut EP Rehearsal @ Nine. Tiana’s career has only grown stronger, working with some of the biggest names in music including Stormzy for the track ‘Rainfall’, Kojey Radical, and hip hop duo Earthgang for their record ‘Collide’, which was featured on the Queen & Slim soundtrack, earning Tiana her first ever Grammy award for ‘Best R&B Song’. Tiana has collaborated with international artists such as Smino, Lucky Daye, and Ayra Starr, performing on worldwide stages like the BET Awards, The Brit Awards, and the infamous Berlin platform A Colors Show.

  1. Ella Mai

OG fans of Ella Mai will know her from her tracks ‘10,000 hours’, ‘She Don’t’ ft Ty Dolla Sign and ‘Naked’, however, the whole world knows Ella Mai from one of the biggest tracks of 2018 and is of course ‘Boo’d Up’, a track that won Ella an impressive amount of awards including Song of the year at the Soul Train Awards, a Grammy Award for Best R&B song, Top R&B song at Billboard Music Awards and that’s just to name a few. Ella Mai has worked with a long list of international musicians including Meek Mill, Chris Brown, Wizkid, and hit-making producer DJ Mustard. In the UK Ella has linked up with the likes of Chip, J Hus, and Mahalia.
