Beauty Standards & Hair Transplants in UK Rap: From Turkey to the Barber Chair

Beauty standards in British society expect (or at least reward) men for being strong, physically fit, having a masculine frame, and possessing a full head of hair-even though high testosterone levels can naturally contribute to male pattern baldness. These expectations filter directly into UK rap due to hypermasculinity and the constant pressure to stay relevant to a younger audience (nobody wants to get called “unc”).

Regardless of societal pressure, most people simply want to look younger, and a full head of hair can significantly boost self-confidence, overall aesthetics, and how you are treated by others.

This is part of the reason UK rappers and influential scene figures have become far more transparent and open about hair enhancements and transplants. Here, we break down some of the figures in UK rap who are opening up about their hair restoration journeys, as well as rumored cases, as the scene slowly destigmatizes the topic.

Paigey Cakey

The first artist on our list was one of the earliest voices in UK rap to publicly discuss her experience with traction alopecia, caused by years of tight braids and pulling. Paigey has extensively documented her journey on YouTube and social media, serving as a brave example for women and UK artists who share the same experience.

Lisa Maffia

Another artist who showed the courage to share her journey publicly is So Solid Crew rapper and UK Garage legend Lisa Maffia. Also affected by traction alopecia from years of tight hairstyles, she detailed her recovery journey publicly, sharing post-op photos and helping to debunk myths surrounding female hair loss.

Gareth (Bad Boy Chiller Crew)

A key member of the bassline and rap group Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Gareth spoke about his experience on platforms like Vice to break down the full process. The Bradford native got a transplant to address a receding hairline and thinning hair that made him self-conscious, showcasing how self-care culture transcends different sub-genres, audiences, and regions.

Konan

In March 2024, Konan posted a video asking fans for advice as he noticed his hairline receding. He even appeared on Channel 4 with Nella Rose and GK Barry to discuss non-surgical hair replacement systems. He eventually opted for a procedure and shared his journey on social media, helping to destigmatize an issue many men face.

Other industry figure heads have been linked to hair transplants through online speculation and public discourse; However it is important to state that none of the artists below have  publicly confirmed these rumours.

Chunkz

While not a UK rapper per se, Chunkz shares a massive audience with UK rap fans and frequently collaborates with artists like ArrDee, AJ Tracey, and Deno. Fans have pointed out how sharp his hairline looks compared to six years ago, sparking heavy speculation, especially after he joked “I’m going Turkey” during a video with Pro-Direct. While Chunkz hasn’t confirmed getting a transplant himself, rumors were fueled further in 2023 when a viral video allegedly showed his photo on a clinic’s client wall.

Headie One

UK rap GOAT Headie One is often affectionately viewed as the “unc” of UK rap due to his unintentionally funny nature. However, just because you are viewed as an uncle figure doesn’t mean you want to look like one. As mentioned, modern UK rap has a young fanbase, and staying at the top of your game requires maintaining both self-confidence and image. Like Chunkz, Headie was featured in a viral video claiming to expose celebrities who have undergone hair transplant surgery, though this remains unconfirmed by him or any medical sources.

Stormzy

UK rap heavyweight Stormzy has previously spoken about the discomfort of his hairline receding as he gets older, prompting rumors that he traveled to Turkey for a hair transplant. However, there is no evidence backing this up. Stormzy appears to have prioritized barbering over surgery; his long-time barber, Mark Maciver (Slider Cutz), clarified that his signature sharp look is achieved solely through a straightened hairline, a close crop, and a clean skin fade.

Fredo

The West London rapper has been the subject of jokes and analysis regarding his hairline for years, particularly given his sharp, high-fashion aesthetic. While little is known about his exact grooming routine, fans frequently banter about potential trips to Istanbul. Whether or not he has undergone any procedures, he serves as a prime example of the immense pressure on UK rappers to always look the part.

Skepta

Rumors surrounding Skepta having a hair transplant have floated around, though far less than for others on this list. Skepta has typically maintained a classic low fade throughout his career. He also disarmed public scrutiny with a lighthearted tweet saying, “Haircut Time – God please deliver my hairline from all evil. Amen,” taking the edge off any online debates about his hairline.

Image maintenance is a standard practice across all realms of entertainment, especially within rap culture. While hiding cosmetic procedures used to be the norm, the artists on this list have shown vulnerability in helping reduce the stigma around hair restoration, demonstrating that self-care is a valid way to maintain both image and confidence.
