JayO makes triumphant return with “Back”

Following the success of “22,” JayO has released his much-anticipated follow up track, “Back.” The new release takes on a more mellow approach to afrobeats.

The North London-based artist has steadily climbed the ranks of the British R&B scene with the rhythmic allure of afrobeat’s of his ancestral home Nigeria. The track is also a testament to his multi-faceted nature as he produced the track alongside long-time collaborator, RZ.

“Back,” is a sure-fire inclusion at house-parties and get togethers across London and Lagos but also acts as a form of self-reflection for JayO. As he looks back upon his personal relationships. He explains: “I wanted to feel good when listening to it, and as the beat kept building, that’s how it felt. One hour later, we had a song about wanting an intimate time with someone and them playing hard to get.”

The creative process behind “Back” was an unforgettable one for JayO. He reveals: “My producer (Rz) and I isolated ourselves while we were away in Ghana earlier this year. We hadn’t made music since we’d been there, so we decided to cook something up on our last night. At the top of the mountains, we wanted to create a feeling that felt like a composition but with a mixture of Afro and R&B.”

Matching the success of “22,” is by no means an easy feat but with “Back,” JayO has most definitely solidified his status as one of the scene’s rising stars. His ability to weave together a variety of musical elements will ensure that the artist will continue to go from strength to strength.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, JayO explained: “That feel-good music that you can still hit play on at a party even forty years later? For me, my music is an interpretation of that feeling…I make music that makes people feel good.”
