Calling himself a ‘melodicion’, GV has described his own sound with a word as unique as his music. By mixing rap, wave and afro-fusion, he has curated his sound like a perfectly audible cocktail made from a plethora of influences.
Returning after a 3 year break, he has hit the ground running with ‘Money Trees’. Showcasing it at Somerset House for Cloud 9 Sessions, Handlebars, Gabos and Dalston Live Radio, he has earned cosigns from industry heavyweights such as Jermaine Jackson and Nippa. His success within the industry has also helped him feature on LinkupTV, G-Shock Radio and Mixtape Madness.
GV is growing under the mentorship of Jammer BBK with the onRoad creative agency alongside other talented young artists. OnRoad have worked on ground-breaking campaigns like ‘Nothing Beats a Londoner’ for Nike and ‘Youthful Arrogance’ for Converse. It is safe to say GV is in all the right places that allow him to show his creative prowess.
His affiliation with the East London charity Rising Tide proves that he is always ready to help new talent and he is ready to help grow the scene. He went on to host his own artist showcase at Hackney Picturehouse, giving emerging artists an opportunity to hit the stage, and later performing himself at the Hackney Music Service Gala, representing his borough further.
Raised on Ghanaian highlife, gospel and 2000’s rap, his multifaceted sound shines through in his Cloud 9 Session in ‘The Pits’ of Somerset House.
Opening up with ‘Boring Kid’, he sets the tone for the session. Despite the song title being a complete juxtaposition of his music, personality and individual achievement, he starts strong, with a presence so strong you would not be aware of his 3 year hiatus. He then goes into Money Trees where he further proves why he is so respected not just in his borough, but industry wide.
“His flow, his cadence… he dominates his tracks—and for me, that was the main reason he needed to be played on the show.” says Amy Francheska from G Shock Radio when speaking about GV’s live presence.
R&B phenom Nippa also has praised his work ethic by saying:
“GV is too talented to go unnoticed. He puts in his 1,000 hours, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s given his flowers and the respect he deserves.”
This is all evident in GV’s catalogue and creative CV. By supporting local causes and consistently producing quality music, he is an artist who deserves appreciation.
His community-first approach to music suited the mission of the free music exhibition at Somerset House which was open to the public in June. Being able to both perform and spectate in the historical artistic hub in Central London is a memorable experience for all involved. Both the venue and artist are always progressive, and that is why it made perfect sense for GV to perform at Somerset House.
